When Residents Choose Their Team

Banebyen, a residential facility for 19 autistic young adults in Viborg, Denmark, previously organized staff into three fixed teams. In March 2023, the facility shifted to individualized teams, allowing each resident to select their own staff members. Staff now work across multiple teams.

This change has, among other things, led to:

  • Increased trust and a sense of safety
  • Residents feeling seen and heard
  • A stronger sense of equality
  • Increased motivation to collaborate from both residents and staff

The implementation and outcomes of this change have been evaluated by a neurodiverse evaluation team consisting of two autistic project members, Cecilie Borch-Andersen and Jesper Lau Guldager, and one non-autistic project manager, Johanne Rørdam Svane.
